A Crossfit Open initiation
Finlay Macrae wasn’t sure what to expect from his first open, here he looks back on his experience.
I wasn’t sure what to expect from my first CrossFit Open. I wasn’t even going to enter it at first as the only day I could get the workout done was a Monday night just before shinty training.
But I decided to give it a go to see what it was all about.
It appealed to me as I’m quite competitive and I knew it would be a good challenge and a good test of fitness against other very fit people.
I was nervous for the first workout and wanted to put in a good showing and felt I did ok.
I really didn’t know how I would do as I’ve never really competed against people in a competition so as a rough guide I thought I’d be happy with 300 reps. I managed to get 338 so I was pleased.
I’m rubbish at pacing myself though and as all three of the exercises ( T2B, dumbbell jerk and rowing ) are hard on the forearms, I slowed down a lot near the end of the workout…it was a long 20 minutes.
This was pretty awful. I knew burpees suck so no surprises there and had done a few of the dumbbell squats the week before so I knew the legs were going to burn but the movements are pretty basic so I was ok with them.
I was worried about the 1 rep max clean though as it’s new to me and something that I definitely need to work on.
In the end I was quite happy with both results but know there’s a lot of room to improve
I saw this and for thought that I’m definitely going to have to scale it down from RX.
Before the workout I knew I couldn’t really string more than a few double unders together at one time and I’ve never tried a ring muscle up so thought it was a no brainer to scale it.
Then I saw a general post from a member on the Box Facebook page basically encouraging people to give it a bash and not to think too much about it. So I thought id give it a go at RX after all.
The double unders were very slow but I just managed to get through the ring muscle ups so I was happy with that.
I was hoping id do better at the HSPUs and was quite looking forward to them when I first saw the workout.
Everyone was going on about the new standards being hard but I’d never experienced the old standard so didn’t have anything to base it against. I soon understood though and found it very tough and burnt out pretty quick then I hit the wall.
I even tried to give it a second bash the day after hoping to pace myself more. During the workout I felt I was doing that and would get onto the heavier set of deadlifts this time…….. Nope, hit the wall even harder and only managed four more reps than before but at least it was an improvement
This was the first workout I managed to get to on the Saturday morning as I usually have other commitments on that day. Which is unfortunate as I see it’s a good group of people encouraging each other all the way which is nice to be a part of.
My daughter Kacie was very intrigued as to where I go training all the time so I even managed to get her down for a look which she loved.
I felt good with the thrusters but true to form I went out to hard with the Chest to bar pull ups and the grip went quite early.
