CrossFit has improved my overall fitness and strength to a level I thought I could never achieve
Now aged 57, Graham Clark joined CrossFit 57North just over a year ago. As Graham approached the age his father passed away (62), he knew it was time to take steps to improve his own wellbeing.
13 months ago, Graham struggled to do a few burpees or run 400 metres. Now, he has reduced his bodyweight by 10% and has recently run a 10k in under an hour! Graham proves it’s never too late to find CrossFit and improve your health and fitness.
We chat to Graham about his challenges and impressive improvements since starting at CrossFit 57North.
- Why did you choose to join 57North?
I initially came along (kicking and screaming) to keep a friend happy – all the members will know who I mean! I was quickly hooked on the concept of all-round fitness.
- Have you seen any improvements since starting CrossFit?
I have achieved great progress in my fitness and general health since joining. I could hardly do a couple of burpees or skips when I started and couldn’t run 400 metres.
- What are your favourite and least favourite CrossFit movements?
I really enjoy the high intensity interval training sessions, not so keen on the bar work but that is just due to my weakness in these disciplines.
- What do you think makes CrossFit and 57North different from regular gyms?
The camaraderie and support from ALL the other members is immense – it’s a bit like personal training without the excessive costs.
- Have you competed, or plan to compete, in any CrossFit competitions?
I have accepted the challenge of entering The Castle Games qualifiers for a chance to compete at the event in Middlesbrough this summer.
- What are your training goals for the coming months?
I’ve been getting back into the swing of things over the past month, following the festive period, and refocussing on getting some new PBs and my diet back in check.
- What advice would you give to anyone considering starting CrossFit?
I would highly recommend CrossFit57 North for many reasons, but most of all the individual support from the coaches and being shown the correct movements to prevent injury at the gym. CrossFit has improved my overall fitness and strength to a level I thought I could never ever achieve.
