Saturday saw what was possibly Scotland’s largest CrossFit event to date – the FFD Throwdown.
This was an event set-up to mark the one year anniversary of the Dundee box, FFD CrossFit.
For the first time, it saw a host of teams from around Scotland descend on mass to battle through their respective heats and hopefully through on to the final stages. All in all, 21 teams were involved with two coming from our own box, 57 North.
Making up 57 North team 1:
- Andrew Begg
- Chris Jenkins
- Stacey Brown
- Amy Rennie
Making up 57 North team 2:
- Alasdair MacDonald
- Chris MacDonald
- Kirstin Hainey
- Natalia McGuire
Both these teams made up Heat 4. Three workouts had to be completed to gain the scores and after all three, the top eight were taken through to the semi-finals. Unfortunately neither of the 57N teams made it through, with Team 1 taking 10th position overall and Team 2 taking 14th overall. However, both have much to be happy about with some very strong performances, especially from Natalia, Amy and Chris MacDonald who are relatively new to competing. Apart from Andy, each team member saw a pb hit in workout 2 – find a 1rm Cluster. Here’s what Andy had to say:
“I thoroughly enjoyed it, it was a good throwdown. The atmosphere was exactly what I thought it should be like in a CrossFit community – everyone was cheering on everyone, no matter what position they were in.
“Great to have a good throwdown like this in Scotland and I hope it would be the first of many as the majority of CrossFit competitions are held further away south of the border.”
All will admit though that there is plenty to take away and learn from for subsequent competitions. In Scotland alone there seems to be some very good boxes churning out the athletes with plenty of strength in depth. CrossFit East Kilbride entered three teams who were very strong; two of which made the semi-finals and one which went on to make the finals.
CrossFit Glasgow topped that however with three teams making the semi’s and two progressing on to the finals taking a 2nd and 4th position overall.
First place and winners of the FFD Throwdown were CrossFit Forth Valley.
The hosts themselves fielded three strong teams and after only a year, have a very bright future indeed in competition.
Looking forward, 57 North have plenty more athletes entering into and qualifying for various competitions up and coming in the New Year. An exciting year awaits.
57 North competitors and spectators would like to thank Graham McCann, Jonny Crowe, Scotty Wilson and the rest at FFD CrossFit for putting on a great show. Look forward to next year.
