After constant pressure from some colleagues, Donald, or Donnie as he’s better known, finally decided to try some of the more bodyweight-based workouts on CrossFit.com. Feeling as though he had performed the movements quite badly, in 2014 Donnie thought he’d try CrossFit properly. This meant putting his aversion to lifting weights aside having been against the idea of using them his entire life.
Having been a boxer, Donnie was convinced that, with his fitness level, he was going to find CrossFit quite easy and he probably wouldn’t stick at it. However, he quickly learned that egos definitely need to be left at the door. He was very quickly humbled and immediately hooked.
Donnie took the CrossFit Level 1 course with the idea of bettering himself rather than becoming a coach but doing this changed his outlook again. He found a love for coaching, and helping others improve became his priority. This led to him getting his CrossFit Level 2 and he’s now working towards getting the CrossFit Level 3 certification.
Donnie’s favourite workouts are Cindy, Nasty Girls and Annie (so much so he named his dog Annie) and his favourite movements are definitely deadlifts and muscle-ups.
As a child, Donnie was involved in martial arts before taking up boxing, which became his only sport until he turned 30. Without boxing Donnie felt a bit lost and that his training was serving no purpose. CrossFit opened up lots of other possibilities and he now competes as a powerlifter – quite odd for someone who never lifted a weight until their mid-30s!
